Abstract and modern

All paintings with simplified or distorted forms, or with unnatural colours, were once considered abstract. Today the concept tends to mean non-objective or non-figurative.  With vintage work it's particularly tricky to keep a coherent policy.

This daring watercolor dated 1984 is a work by a certain Margaret Norton, whom we unfortunately can't place further. The running paint evidently brings stalks to mind and flowers as subject, yet the impression goes beyond the naturalistic.

This is a work by the acclaimed Danish artist Svend Aage Tauscher (1911 - 1982) dating back to the 1960's.

Out of an apparent chaos a seated figure, apparently a woman, appears, facing something but vaguely definable. Typically Scandinavian hues. Materials: oil on canvas. The hanging device is contemporary, assuring wall detachment. Surface, texture, aspect: unevenly applied paint, in some places thickly layered, alternating satin and matte finish

  • Reference 295  Octopus  - Unknown signature

British origin - monotype print/drawing, mixed technique, fourth quarter 20th century, illegible signature

    Abstract composition - British (1990's)

Black ink and charcoal on etched vellum paper, signed by the artist and set in a contemporary glazed frame. Overall size is 17.7 x 16.5"

This superb work in sharply delineated black and gray tones seems to be a work of a certain "Pearce", judging by the pencil signature at the bottom right. It's swirling lines brings inevitably an octopus or a mammoth to mind. Probably 1990's.

A work in a profusion of grey tones with smooth and swirling forms and unsymmetrical emphasis. The image brings evident pictorial figurative connotations to either an octopus or to a mammoth. Materials: ink and charcoal on etched vellum paper. The assorted framing is contemporary, the sheet being freely attached behind the glazing with borders showing. Back with protective boarding and hanging device assuring wall detachment. Surface, texture, aspect: smooth surfacing, matte finish Painting technique:  a complex etching technique has produced a basic imprint to which freehand drawing has been added.
