Genrepainting or genre scene painting depicts aspects of everyday life or portrays ordinary people engaged in common activities. Animal painting can be classed in this category. Since the sixteenth century and the Flemish painter Brueghel, the genre has been extremely popular. Portraiture, an equally ancient art form, has recently stirred renewed interest.

Original oil on canvas, first quarter 20th century, Unknown signature
A mask-like portrait - Belgian (1910's)?
A Fernand Khnopff inspired painting; red, black and green oil on canvas, period framing, probably the original. Size is 23.4 x 27.4 inches (59,5 x 69,5 cm). With the frame 25.6 x 27.4 inches (65 x 75 cm)
An unusual and fascinating image of what seems an androgyne being. The facial features seems hewn out of a block of stone, floating as it were against a deeply green background.

Original charcoal on paper, last quarter 19th century, signed Luce
Madame Luce as Model - French (1890's)
A standing nude, the model being without doubt Miss Bouin (see below). A private drawing in the academic genre, delicate and intimate. Estimated 1893-1894. Charcoal on thin paper. Good condition - see below. Under glass in an elegant vintage frame with usual wear and tear. Size is 12.2 x 16.1 inches (31 x 41 cm); with the frame: 16 x 20 inches (40.5 x 51 cm). Signed lower left.
Maximilien Luce (13 March 1858 – 6 February 1941) was a prolific French Neo-impressionist artist, known for his paintings, illustrations, engravings, and graphic art, and also for his anarchist activism. Starting as an engraver, he then concentrated on painting, first as an Impressionist, then as a Pointillist, and finally returning to Impressionism.
Luce aligned with the Neo-impressionists not only in their artistic techniques, but also in their political philosophy of anarchism. On 8 July 1894, Luce, suspected of involvement in the 24 June assassination of President of France Marie Fran ois Sadi Carnot, was arrested and was confined to Mazas Prison. He was released forty two days later, on 17 August, following his acquittal at the Procès des trente. Pissarro, Signac, Cross and the renowned art critic Fénelon supported Luce in his fight against injustice.
In 1893, Luce met Ambroisine ''Simone'' Bouin in Paris. She became his model, companion, common-law wife, and wife. Bouin was usually referred to as ''Madame Luce'', even before their eventual marriage. She was frequently a model for him, appearing in many of his works, often partially or fully nude, other times depicted in scenes such as on a balcony or combing her hair.

A portrait of the controversial film maker Pasolini - Italian or French, 1960's
Oil on painter's cardboard in a simple period frame (original). Size is 10,2 x 11.6 inches (26 x 29,5 cm), with the frame 12.2 x 13.4 inches (31 x 34 cm).
A breathtaking portrait with great psychological insight, depicting the celebrated Italian filmmaker, theatre writer, poet and painter Pier Paolo Pasolini. The portrait shows Pasolini in his early forties, the time when he became notorious and his productions begun to score success. In radical opposition to the contemporary photographs of him depicted to the right, where he is seen smiling and relaxed, he displays here the brooding countenance and the introverted face that became the mark of his later years. .
A period portrait of astonishing quality, capturing the very essence of the sitter. Condition: excellent. The paper seal on the backside is broken and someone has presumably examined the edges. The work is an oil sketch with bits of the underdrawing in pencil still visible. The right part has been left unachieved as the artist must have judged the work complete in its present state. Undeciphered signature below right. Meditative philosophical scribblings on the backside in French.
