Magda Hagstotz
The Bruges Collection

The relatively recently deceased German painter
Magda Hagstotz (1914-2001) grew to artistic maturity shortly after the second world war and kept going strong well into her old age. She was unusually prolific and her oeuvre built up steadily throughout the years. At her death in 2001, a fraction only of her lifetime work had been exhibited, sold or traded. What was substantial in her estate has today been sold to individual and enlightened collectors, especially in and around Stuttgart, her home town.
Magda Hagstotz was an amazingly gifted painter with a predominantly abstract touch. She handled color and form in a manner that only the greatest artists of the 20th century have equalled. In due time, Magda Hagstotz will crystallize as a major figure in the Modern Art movement.
The Bruges Collection is a choice sampling of Magda Hagstotz’ creative world, wholly representative of her artistic imagination and comprising works in all her favorite techniques. It contains indisputably some of her best paintings. The collection is a careful selection among the most vibrant items left by her estate and counts
26 individual works of art, and one sketched self-portrait, all of which are in excellent condition.
Hagstotz’ prices in auction venues are still modest and few works have been publicly sold. As the primary market trading in her work is now over, we can expect auction sales attractiveness growing in momentum and her effective prices rise.
The worth of the present collection will steadily increase as these market mechanisms get to work.
Combine a visit to the city of Bruges with viewing this amazing collection!

Magda Hagstotz - The Bruges Collection no. 1 (26) ‘Hinein’ Mixed media, 1970’s, unsigned, estate #.
Hinein
Applied spatula technique, glazed effect; on heavy particle board; edges painted; hanging assures slight detachment from the wall. Size is 19 x 19”.
This work makes immediate reference to Magda Hagstotz amazing craft talents. All evidence points to that it has been intricately and painstakingly put together, yet it expresses swiftness and ease in execution. The title "inwards" appropriately denotes the onlooker's sensation of compelling turbulence.
Excellent condition except one small crack in the surfacing in the middle left (aged and slightly discolored) and some small losses of surfacing here and there (aesthetically neutral). See close-up photographs.

Nachteule
Poured Lacquer on prestructured thin particle board; edges painted; hanging assures slight detachment from the wall. Size is 15 x 18.1”.
This sixties "nightowl" is done in the glossy lacquer technique dear to Hagstotz. The roughly treated, scraped and styled ground gives the work sculptural qualities. The very high-gloss surfacing provides extra color depth through reflection (see blue effects on the detailed photos).
Excellent condition for its age.

Gouache, oil, tempera on thin particle board; edges painted; hanging assures slight detachment from the wall. Size is 18.9 x 18.9”.
Yet another mixed media technique by the ever versatile Hagstotz. The matte surfacing seems to have grown onto the painting all by itself. Unruly, undefined, caught between contrasting forces.

Hagstotz has recuperated here and strongly warped old billboard with remnants of glued-on papers.
