Magda Hagstotz was quite naturally under the influence of her times and especially of the Bauhaus school of thought that held that every artist ought to possess craft know-how. Burgeoning socialist ideas, political turmoil and, finally, totalitarian ideas implied that the exercise of art were to be balanced with pragmatic considerations. Hence, before, during and after the war, and even well beyond, Hagstotz exercised professionally as industrial designer of textiles and leather wear. As she had her formative years interrupted by war, one might think of her as part of the Verschollene Generation (the lost generation); however this is only true in regard of the relative little renown that she enjoys today. Indeed, Magda Hagstotz’s period as a mature artist only begins in the fifties.
Magda Hagstotz share her generation with Hartung, Soulages, Motherwell, Pollock, de Kooning etc and it becomes quite natural to place her work in the currents of the post-war Abstrakten Expressionismus, taking the form of Action Painting and Color Field in the United States and Tachismus and Informel in Germany. When comparing her work with the previous German generation, with Ida Kerkovius, Willi Baumeister or Max Ackerman, perpetrating in their own personal fashion the style of their eminent teacher Adolf Hölzel, it’s evident that Hagstotz carries on a legacy determined by her cultural background.
However, her work is uniquely personal and closer
in spirit to the evolved abstraction of her contemporary countrymen Karl Otto Götz, Fritz Winter and Emil Schumacher. The versatility in expression, the dynamic tension in all her compositions
and the ever present metaphysical content that somehow prevents her paintings to become fully abstract, make her stand out in her own right as a completely original artist.
The Bruges Collection is a rare opportunity to acquire a major statement of the European postwar expressionist movement; and this by one of its finest and most versatile representatives.
